ELEMENTis a Solo show of recent work based on the 5 elements EARTH, AIR, FIRE, WATER and AETHER.
Classical elements typically refer to the pre-scientific concepts in Ancient Greece. This body of work encapsulates those elements and will contain work based on steel and canvas.
We all recognise, and are equally fascinated by, the four main elements which are recurring themes in my work. In their simplest form I try to capture the swell of the sea or when the waters are cold and calm, the land shaped by ‘lines of desire’, the air as it hangs heavy with a pending storm, or the hypnotic power of a fire in a hearth.
Aether is a more intangible quality. For the Chinese it is a void, in Ayurvedic medicine it is the element that binds the other elements together. For me it iswhere these elements connect: at the shoreline, as the sun sinks below the horizon, the atmosphere around a hunter’s moon or in the gloaming of a summer’s evening . It could even be that feeling of awe we experience when when we spend time in the mountains or by the sea or moved by human endeavour. Maybe it is where inspiration lies or the connection between the viewer and the artwork.
